Why we use XRechnung
Legal certainty and standardisation
XRechnung meets the requirements of the European standard EN 16931 and the German e-invoicing regulations. We therefore use a recognised and legally accepted standard and avoid proprietary stand-alone solutions.
Automated processing
Its structured design enables invoice data to be seamlessly integrated into systems for accounting, payment processing and archiving. This reduces manual data entry and errors.
Well positioned for the future
XRechnung is an established standard for electronic invoices in Germany. Using a uniform format makes it possible to implement regulatory requirements efficiently.
High data quality
The format enables all relevant invoice information to be represented clearly and unambiguously. This improves the quality of your data and reduces reconciliation efforts.

FAQ, Frequently Asked Questions
An e-invoice is an electronic invoice in a structured data format that enables automated digital processing. Commerzbank uses exclusively XRechnung in XML format for this purpose.
You will receive your invoice as an XRechnung in XML format. No additional PDF will be sent. The XML file is the basis for your processing.
No additional PDF will be provided.
Commerzbank sends e-invoices exclusively by email to the e-invoice address you specify. The XRechnung is attached to this email as an XML file.
XRechnung is primarily intended for machine processing. However, there are several options:
- Many ERP and accounting systems can import XRechnung invoices and display them in a readable format.
- The market is currently developing an increasing number of readers and viewers that enable XML files in XRechnung format to be opened in a clear, human-readable view.
Please speak to your IT service provider or software provider about suitable solutions.
You need:
- An email infrastructure that can receive XML attachments;
- Ideally, systems such as ERP or accounting software that can import and process XRechnung invoices, or suitable reader solutions.
Please clarify the extent to which your systems support XRechnung with your IT service provider.
XRechnung is the legally established standard in Germany for electronic invoices issued to public-sector contracting authorities and meets the relevant standards. By using XRechnung, we ensure standardisation, legal certainty and high data quality.
Commerzbank has also deliberately decided against using the ZUGFeRD format. This is because the law stipulates that the XML embedded in ZUGFeRD is legally authoritative - even if the PDF document is human-readable. Under regulatory requirements, the invoice recipient would therefore always have to reconcile the information in the PDF with the embedded XML data. This would create additional verification work, which is avoided by using XRechnung exclusively.
In online banking, you can change your email address at any time. It`s quick and easy. Your dedicated Commerzbank contact person can also assist you and will inform you about the specific process for changing the email address you provided us with.
In online banking, under Self Service, you can store a delivery address for several companies consecutively, provided that you have the relevant authorisation for each company.
After you have provided the details, Commerzbank will use this information to send your e-invoices from January 1, 2027 onwards.
